Survey on digital media and mental health

Have you ever noticed how your mood shifts after spending time online… whether on social media, streaming platforms, gaming, or other digital spaces?

Digital media are deeply embedded in students’ daily lives. They can support connection, relaxation, and self-expression, but they can also contribute to stress, distraction, or negative emotional experiences.

The STREAM Study (Student Technology Related Effects on Affect and Mental Health), conducted at the University of Basel and UPK Basel, aims to better understand how these everyday digital experiences relate to students’ mental health and wellbeing.

We are particularly interested in how digital media use relates to emotional experiences, attention and concentration, self-esteem and self-efficacy, as well as broader mental health. The study also examines different types of media use, including social media, streaming, gaming, and AI companions, alongside potentially problematic patterns such as compulsive use, neglect of responsibilities, or academic difficulties. In addition, we explore exposure to harmful online experiences, such as cyberbullying, sextortion, grooming, and other forms of online risk.

By participating, you contribute to research that aims to improve understanding of student mental health in an increasingly digital world.
