Mental Health Resources

We strive to provide an ever-growing list of resources which extends itself from basic information on how to access psychological help in Switzerland, to helplines.

Different ways to access psychological help in Switzerland

There are various methods to access psychological assistance when necessary. Your first point of contact could be your family doctor (GP), although there are also other ways. Many people are unaware that GPs can prescribe 15 psychological therapy sessions covered by mandatory basic insurance. Should you require additional sessions, you will need to consult a psychiatrist. However, in such cases, your therapist will provide you with more detailed guidance.

How do I find a therapist?

If you don’t have any recommendations and your doctor cannot suggest a suitable therapist, the usual solution is to search online. Many therapists maintain their own websites and you’ll find a wide range of options. Don’t hesitate to reach out: send an email (in the hopes they have availability for new patients) and schedule an appointment. It’s quite common to try several therapists before finding the one that’s right for you. Additionally, there are valid online therapy options, particularly in neighboring countries. It’s advisable to confirm beforehand if your health insurance recognizes the therapists you’re considering, as not all are covered. The cost for a session typically ranges from 150 to 300 CHF.

I cannot wait for weeks… I need help now!

In some cases, it is worth looking in other cantons (or countries) for available therapists. Alternatively, you can always contact your local psychiatric hospital to request an appointment.

You can also reach out to 143.ch at 0800 143 000 for immediate support in English, German, French, and Italian.

Additionally, remember that the general emergency number, 144, is also valid for psychiatric emergencies, as is the emergency room of your local hospital.
